John Hamlett is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist that has been practicing in the Richmond area for over 35 years. He has experience working with a variety of mental health issues and specializes in working with depression, anxiety, bipolar, trauma survivors, anger management and relationship issues. John provides a thorough assessment exploring the emotional, psychological and relational causes of mental health symptoms. He creates a warm, safe atmosphere in which you can share your deepest concerns. John teaches his clients how to identify and express their unmet needs and feelings in a nonviolent manner. He works with couples to improve communication and facilitate the process of healing and forgiveness. John earned his B.S. in Psychology at James Madison University and his M.Ed. in Counseling at the University of Virginia. In addition, John earned his Master of Divinity degree at a local seminary and offers faith-based counseling for individuals and couples of all religious traditions. John is an EMDRIA certified EMDR therapist who helps individuals who have experienced abuse and trauma. He primarily uses a Cognitive Behavioral approach to counseling as well as Gestalt therapy.
